The New Brunswick Teen Apprenticeship Program (NBTAP) is now being offered to Grade 10 students attending Fredericton High School, Leo Hayes High School and Oromocto High School.

NBTAP is a 3 year pre-apprentice program that gives students a head-start on a career in the skilled trades. This is the perfect opportunity for Aboriginal Grade 10 students who have an interest in hands-on learning and who would like to pursue a career in the trades.

Aboriginal students are strongly encouraged to apply to this new program before the deadline of March 31, 2014.

"The New Brunswick Teen Apprenticeship Program brings back the focus to trades within the New Brunswick educational system," Jimmy Arnold, the Aboriginal Adult Learning and Apprenticeship Coordinator with JEDI stated. "The Aboriginal population under 25 in New Brunswick is growing fast and it would be great to see more young Aboriginals trained in the trades.  Their experience would be a great addition to the NB Aboriginal talent pool and they would be ready as our workforce begins to retire."

How does the program work?

NBTAP includes 3 summer work terms where students enrolled in the program will begin to learn a skilled trade with a local NBTAP employer. Students are paid $10-$13/hr for full time work during their summer work term.

During school, students are encouraged to take trade course electives that complement their work term.

Upon completion of the program, successful students will have enough on-the-job training to qualify for in-class training in their specific trade and can write their first Apprenticeship exam.

What trade options are available to students?

The trades offered will depend on the industries and participating NBTAP employers in the local area.
