JEDI, in partnership with the Canadian Career Development Foundation (CCDF) and the Department of Post-Secondary Education Training and Labour (DPETL), has created a Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) Cultural Awareness Program. This program was created as an introductory module to the TRC’s 94 Calls to Action. The objective of this program is to bring forth awareness and to educate participants on the history of Residential Schools, the dynamics involved and the environmental and personal impacts on the Indigenous population.
Initially, JEDI created this program to be a half day module to introduce the 94 Calls to Action within CCDF’s Career Development Certification Training Program. This first introductory module was a huge success. As a result of this success, JEDI created a committee to begin planning a second module in partnership with Indigenous and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC). This second module will be delivered for the first time from October 16th – 20th, 2017.
This new TRC Cultural Awareness module is being developed to help create understanding and awareness of the 94 Calls to Action and will educate employers on how they can incorporate the TRC Calls to Action in a workplace setting. It will provide full education on the history of Indigenous peoples; including the history and legacy of the Residential Schools.
The objectives of this module include:
Establishing a common foundation of Indigenous history as well as to identify relevant historical economic practices
Inform participants of relevant documents related to Indigenous history and economic practices
Be able to identify the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s Calls to Action that are relevant to Economic Development, Employment, and Career Development
Examine how participants might implement the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action within the workplace
These two modules will be very valuable to businesses, training institutions, and government departments as they will fill a gap that currently exists in regards to Indigenous cultural awareness.
JEDI believes that these modules will create a new dialog and influence a transformation within organizations. Businesses and people who take this training will become the ambassadors for change by incorporating some of the 94 Calls to Action into their policies and procedures for hiring employees. Once education and awareness of the real issues begins, dialog and change can take place.
