Tell me about your story.
I am a life long New Brunswicker. I grew up in a small community on the Miramichi called Doaktown but I’ve now lived in Fredericton longer than I did in my hometown. I think I was always a city girl growing up in the country. I love the water and nature for the peacefulness and beauty but enjoy the convenience of small city living. I became a single parent at 19 so my main concern was earning a living to support my daughter and myself. I worked as a waitress for approximately 12 years until my daughter was old enough to afford me the flexibility of going to school. I earned my diploma in Accounting and Business and was so excited when I was given the award for Excellence in Accounting Programs. In high school I was more concerned about the weekends than excelling in my classes.
I began working at a post-secondary educational institution and stayed with them for 12 years in a few roles. I worked in finance, teaching, and was the manager the final 5 years. Throughout that time I continued my education by obtaining my PCP Certification with the Canadian Payroll Association and my Human Resources Management at UNB. I then moved on to focus my attention strictly on accounting. I love finances and enjoy everything about the profession. Because of my background I became passionate about people furthering their education and believing you are never too old to obtain your dream. I think my favorite JEDI events to attend have always been the graduation ceremonies. I love seeing the look of pride on the faces of the clients and families!
How did you land your position at JEDI?
I was contacted by Priority Personnel to see if I would be interested in applying for a 6 month position. I had just completed another contract so the timing was perfect. Now it’s been 4 years and I love being part of the JEDI Team.
Can you describe your position?
I do all of the day to day accounting – accounts payable, receivable and payroll so I am entering and issuing payment of JEDI’s expenses and sending invoices for such things as sponsorship of events. I also do the banking as well as monthly bank reconciliations. My job has many administrative tasks and educational aspects behind the scenes which ensures compliance. My goal is to always ensure JEDI’s finances are in compliance with the policies, procedures and regulations of our governing bodies such as Revenue Canada and our partners and funders as well as internal policies/procedures.
What makes you unique?
I believe all of us are unique in our life experiences and work history which brings together a group of diverse individuals whose ideas and opinions come together to create a dynamite organization!
If I were to ask my daughter what makes me unique she would probably say my inability to say the word ‘no’ to my granddaughter but with her I had no problem at all.
What is your favorite thing about working at JEDI?
The people! We have been going through what feels like a long period of separation with the Covid-19 Pandemic and I miss everyone. We work hard but also have a lot of fun and laughs. I am excited to see everyone again in person even if it we have to maintain physical distancing.
