Considering Post-Secondary Education? PSE Helper is a Great New Resource

Lori Nash January 3, 2014

“The website was designed specifically for New Brunswick Mi'kmaq and Maliseet students, but we hope this format and service can be adapted to other First Nation communities and cultures across Canada,” said Bob Atwin, executive director of First Nation Education Initiative Inc. “The goal has always been to assemble resources and present them in a way that is current, user friendly, and relevant to unique cultural identities and we are pleased with the feedback and results so far.”

The website is sure to be a destination for future and current First Nation students as it provides information on:

 1.       Resumes – the site provides some of the basics needed when creating your resume, including the different types of resumes you can use and some examples of different resume formats.

2.       Canadian scholarships and bursaries – the site lists over 40 different scholarships and bursaries that are currently available to Canadian students. Some are specific to First Nation students so be sure to check them out if you are planning to attend a post-secondary institution.

3.       Calendar of student and career events taking place in the province of NB – the calendar is an easy way to keep up-to-date with what is happening in your community.

4.       Job Board – the site provides a list of current online job sites to help students and graduates find work.

5.       Information on accommodations at NB post-secondary schools – the site gives you some of the details you’ll need if you are looking to live on campus.

6.       Information on credit transfers between post-secondary institutions – if you are changing schools, be sure to see if your current credits can be transferred to your new school.

7.       Contact information for community elders – this page is still being set up, but it is a great resource to connect with community elders.

8.       Information on Apprenticeship and trades – these pages include information on Red Seal certification and student testimonials.

9.       Forums – a great way to connect with other First Nation students.

PSE Helper was made possible through a partnership with the First Nation Education Initiative Inc. and the New Brunswick Department of Post-Secondary Education, Training and Labour.
